What is VOC?
03/01/2022

There are three different ways in which people are exposed to chemicals: through inhalation, ingestion, and dermal contact. While these exposures are equally important, the chemicals we are exposed to on a daily basis mostly come from the indoor air we breathe in homes, offices, and schools, making it 2 to 10 times more polluted than outdoor air. These volatile chemicals are commonly referred to as "Volatile Organic Compounds" (VOCs).

VOCs are generally a source of concern, due to their ability to react with other pollutants in the atmosphere at low levels, such as nitrogen oxides. High levels of ground-level ozone can be harmful to human health and agricultural areas. They can also affect materials like rubber.

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are a large group of mostly colorless and odorless liquids and gases. Being volatile, these liquids readily evaporate at room temperature.

VOCs in Living Spaces

It is estimated that around 11,000 different chemicals and compounds are released into the environment from various materials found in our living spaces. Significant levels of VOC emissions into the air come from our household items. Coatings, adhesives, sealants, varnishes, and processed materials (furniture, electronic devices, paint, mattresses, carpets, parquet, etc.), all composed of synthetics, can contribute greatly to gas emissions. Even smaller items like household cleaners play a role.

When all these substances are present together in the same space, the level of gas emissions increases exponentially. One of the most common VOCs is formaldehyde, which is an organic compound.

The Effect of VOCs on Our Health

VOCs can significantly impact air quality, which in turn affects our health. This is especially true for individuals with asthma, migraines, respiratory issues, as well as the elderly, disabled individuals, and children. Depending on the levels, VOCs can cause a range of health problems, from irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat to nausea and even more serious illnesses and cancer.

A Healthier Option

By choosing low VOC and VOC-free building materials, you can create a healthier living environment. It can be challenging to know how to select the best and healthiest product, even if the items you purchase have green labels. Therefore, you can prefer products that have been tested for emissions by a third party. This way, you can ensure that you are purchasing low-emission and environmentally friendly products.

Dendro manufactures products in compliance with European standards and E1 quality. The E1 certification is evidence that the product does not contain substances that could be harmful to human health. Many leading countries in the world, especially require the use of E1 certified flooring in places like nurseries. The aim of this practice is to prevent the use of banned and carcinogenic chemicals like 'Formaldehyde' and to protect human health.
