World Architecture
Day is a special day that brings together architects, designers and society
from around the world. The theme, which is closely followed by the
architectural community, was determined as "Architecture for Resilient
Communities" by the UIA (International Union of Architects). This week
we're celebrating World Architecture Day by taking a closer look at the theme!
What is World Architecture Day?
World Architecture Day is celebrated around the world every year on the first Monday of October. With this special day, architects, designers and society come together. With the new theme determined every year by the UIA (International Union of Architects), which was founded in 1948, the focus is on the critical and unsolved issues of that year. In this way, it creates awareness about what kind of responsibility architecture has on social life, environment and aesthetics. World Architecture Day reminds us not only of the creativity of architects and their power to design spaces that provide solutions to society's needs, but also of their responsibility to build more sustainable and livable worlds for future generations.
2023 Theme
The theme for 2023 was determined in parallel with the United Nations (UN) World Habitat Day. This year's theme aims to highlight the importance of architectural works to improve the quality of life of cities and communities. Uncontrolled urbanization, epidemics, public uprisings and the accompanying social problems that have occurred in recent years await urgent solutions. Considering that architecture not only builds physical structures but also improves people's quality of life, the importance of this year's theme comes to the fore once again. The theme of "Architecture for Resilient Communities" emphasizes the need for cities to consider not only aesthetics, but also social and environmental aspects.
Architecture for Resilient Communities
The theme of Architecture for Resilient Communities is planned to encourage architects to design safe, healthy and accessible spaces that suit the needs of communities. On World Architecture Day, UIA will remind that the profession of architecture is not only aesthetic, but also a force that shapes people's lives. UIA member countries are expected to explore and discuss policies that enable better design for resilient societies within this year's theme.
The 2023 World Architecture Day theme aims for architects to understand the needs of society, respect cultural heritage, and consider nature and biodiversity while building the future.
