Artificial Intelligence and Architecture
29/08/2022

Human is a curious biological being that is in a constant state of change and development and has the power to create. On the other hand, artificial intelligence is a type of technological intelligence that has multi-layered hardware that imitates natural intelligence and is displayed by machines, and is a very comprehensive branch of computer science. What is expected from artificial intelligence (AI for short) is using the data at hand to develop flawless works that eliminate various mistakes that people can make. Recently, artificial intelligence is used in wide working areas, has brought various innovations to the architecture and building sector, and has started to be included in the sector.

Technology's high development speed necessitated the involvement of artificial intelligence and machine learning in different sectors. Such a multidisciplinary sector architecture has benefited from these developments and has begun to experience changes related to artificial intelligence. As a result, the understanding of intelligent building design has become widespread. The working principle of artificial intelligence is to reach the optimum result by processing the data at hand and using it in many different sectors attracting industry professionals. In this, the rapid integration into daily life and the completion of the work that takes a long time in the traditional business model in a shorter time have a great role.

First AI Pavilion: The Island

Taking its name from the first computer program "Ada Lovelace", the pavilion is an artificial intelligence-supported structure that offers a performative environment. The structure is a part of Microsoft and implemented as part of the Artist in Residence program is actively changing color. The artificial intelligence included in the pavilion evaluates the data of the visitors and provides personalized lighting in different colors. The shell, which processes the data it receives from the tone of voice and facial expressions of the visitors, creates dynamic color waves and provides a photoluminescence experience.

Daedalus Pavilion

Artificial intelligence has started to take place in many different fields of architecture in the recent past. A London-based startup center AI Build, an autonomous construction systems manufacturer, implemented the "Daedalus Pavilion" project and attracted the attention of the architectural community. The main idea of the project is to announce how artificial intelligence can affect the construction industry in the future. In the construction of the pavilion, artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms were used to detect possible errors and generate improvised solutions. The pavilion was built with 3D Printing and reminded to the butterfly is built on an area of 5x5 meters, and create the impression that it will fly to the audience.

Artificial Intelligence at Urban Scale

In 2019, Sidewalk Labs created variations of urban-scale planning using artificial intelligence-assisted machine learning and computational design tools. They developed a custom tool to create a design proposal to accomplish this. The software tool works by using location, street layout, building heights, orientation, and weather data, and offers possible scenarios that facilitate urban planning and architectural design. In addition, it has been stated that the use of machine learning guarantees more useful results with the increase in the number of knowledge and experience in the future.

Other Areas Where Artificial Intelligence Can Be Useful

As humanity changes and develops, technology will be renewed and more involved in our lives. In this adventure in which we interact with each other, the path of architecture is shaped more clearly. Artificial intelligence can be integrated in many different fields, and the following items can change the way architecture happens in an unexpected way.

1- It can shorten the preliminary work period of the architect by presenting the design idea with more variations.

2- With the output of algorithmic processes, the construction of parametric design can become more widespread.

3- With the information got by artificial intelligence that calculations such as workflow and cost, can be completed in a shorter time, and this can shorten the project process by optimizing the progress of the construction, which normally takes a long time to calculate.

4- The lifestyle of humans needs to be constantly renewed due to the increasing population and changing living conditions. As the changing living conditions increase the urban need, smart cities that will solve this need in a beneficial way can be completed in a shorter time with the support of artificial intelligence.
