Maintenance 101: How to Take Care of Your Hardwood Floor
30/05/2022

Parquet flooring adds charm and beauty to any room where it is applied, but like most flooring types, they need regular maintenance to maintain their quality appearance. Knowing what needs to be considered from the first moment your parquet installation is completed and having a good command of the cleaning processes will help you ensure long-lasting usage.

What are the Tips for Protecting Your Parquet Flooring?

·        Balancing Indoor Temperature and Humidity

To maintain the strength and attractiveness of your parquets, you should pay attention to keeping the relative humidity of the area they are used as constant as possible. The recommended relative humidity is 40-60%. The recommended average temperature is 15-23 °C.

·        Protecting Your Parquet from Your Furniture

Furniture protector felts are a simple and inexpensive way to protect your new flooring. Suitable for chairs, tables, sofas, beds, etc. in your home. The felts that you will apply to the feet of your furniture can prevent scratches. You can easily prevent scratches in your office by using transparent protectors under the chairs in your work areas.

Another piece of advice to prevent the parquet from being scratched is to lift your heavy furniture instead of sliding it be moved.

·        Avoiding Liquid Contact

Liquids are wood's worst enemy! Since laminated parquet is produced from 100% wood, liquids in contact with the floor cause staining, blistering, and similar problems on the parquet. To prevent any permanent damage, you should immediately treat the floor with a cloth or paper towel when liquid comes into contact with it.

·        Using Rugs and Carpets

Wood regains its natural color over time. Not laying a carpet for a few months after the first installation of your parquet will ensure that the color change is balanced. In cases that need to be laid, you should change the position of the carpet regularly to balance this difference, as there will be a color difference under the carpet.

Dirt, dust, sand, and gravel create a sanding effect on your natural parquet.  To minimize this situation, having mats at your home and office entrances will be beneficial.

Frequently used areas in your home (such as hallways, kitchen sink, and stove floor area) experience more wear and tear from use. It will prevent scratching by protecting your rug or carpet floors in these areas.

·        Taking Precautions During Your Renovation Times

Over time, you may want to make some renovations or innovations in your home/office. During the operations on your ceiling or walls, you should protect your parquet with a moisture-permeable material (eg paper, cardboard) so that it is not damaged. When covering your floor, do not use adhesive tapes on your parquet. Some types of adhesive can damage your parquet.

·        Using Parquet with Pets

If your pawed housemate has long nails, you should take care to keep their nails short, as they will scratch your parquets and cause wear on the surface.

How Should Parquet Flooring Be Cleaned?

Engineered parquets are divided into two, polished or oiled, according to their finish surfaces. Although the cleaning methods are basically the same, the cleaning products used differ. It is recommended by the manufacturer to use a cleaning product suitable for your parquet type.

If the floor is dirty after the first installation of your parquet flooring or after your renovations, we recommend cleaning it with a little soapy water. However, after the first cleaning, dry methods should be preferred for day-to-day cleaning.

·       Dry Cleaning

Keeping all sand and other abrasives off your hardwood floors will help prevent your hardwood from being scratched and damaged. Cleaning the floors daily using dry cleaning methods such as a vacuum or soft broom removes various abrasives from your parquet and prolongs the life of your parquet.

·        Wet Cleaning

You can wipe your wooden parquet floors with the recommended cleaning material at certain intervals. Dip your mop into the bucket of the cleaning solution you prepared, wring it out completely, and mop the floor in the direction of the wood moire. Always work with two buckets. Have soapy water in one bucket and clean water in the other for rinsing a dirty cloth or mop.

Tufted mop heads are not recommended as they leave too much water behind.

·        Caring for Oily Floors Using Oil

After a certain period of use, the oiled floor may look a little worn and dull. In this case, maintenance should be done with a small amount of maintenance oil. Before lubricating, clean the floor with a cleaner mixed with water. Apply the maintenance oil applied by spraying quickly and do not use your parquet floor for 4-5 hours after the application. Wet cleaning can be done after 24 hours.
