Bauhaus Art Movement: The Intersection of Art and Craft
23/01/2023

Bauhaus, which most people know as a hardware store is an art movement. Bauhaus Art Movement spread to the world through the Bauhaus School was founded in Germany in 1919. As DENDRO, we continue our series where we explain the art movements. This week we examine the "Bauhaus" which is the intersection point of art and craft.

Bauhaus consists of the words "bauen" and "haus" which are meaning "for home and office". On the other hand, as founded in 1919 by the German architect Weimar Walter Gropius the Bauhaus School is a modern and experimental school that aims at the intersection of art and craft. He has offered teachings to his students in an understanding that will improve both their artistic and technical skills for many years.

The Bauhaus Movement

Bauhaus Art Movement is a movement that determines the basic principles of modern design. In particular, it pioneered the production of works that aim to highlight the balance between functionality and aesthetics. Bauhaus students are educated to make simple, clean, and functional designs using natural materials. They have produced works with a simple form language to provide a balance between aesthetics and functionality.

The Bauhaus Manifesto

Bauhaus also pioneered many experimental studies. As stated in the education manifesto, art and craft were considered as a whole. In this direction, students and educators from different disciplines such as painters, sculptors, and architects carried out their studies in an educational environment where they can be together. The barriers between art and craft have been removed. The studies have been produced for function and functionality rather than an aesthetic concern.

‘…Architects, sculptors, painters—we all must return to craftsmanship! For there is no such thing as “art by profession.” There is no essential difference between the artist and the artisan. The artist is an exalted artisan. Merciful heaven, in rare moments of illumination beyond man’s will, may allow art to blossom from the work of his hand, but the foundations of proficiency are indispensable to every artist. This is the source of creative design. So let us therefore create a new guild of craftsmen, free of the divisive class pretensions that endeavoured to raise a prideful barrier between craftsmen and artists! Let us strive for, conceive and create the new building of the future that will unite every discipline, architecture and sculpture and painting, and which will one day rise heavenwards from the million hands of craftsmen as a clear symbol of a new belief to come.’ - Weimar Walter Gropius, Bauhaus Manifesto, 1919.

As a manufacturer of laminated parquet and marquetry parquet, we believe in the power of being inspired by the basic principles of art movements by taking advantage of the potential of wood. As Dendro, we create simple and functional flooring designs using the power of natural materials. As can be seen in our "Style" Marquetry Flooring product, we include modern lines in our designs. We create our product designs with the inspiration of modern lines such as De Stijl, which emerged under the influence of the Bauhaus movement. Nevertheless, we produce products with high surface resistance by giving importance to functionality.

As DENDRO, we research the effects of the design world from past to present and compile articles that you can read with pleasure.
