This week, we look at a modern housing project built using local materials and techniques.

Vietnam's Mekong Delta is home to many people who live on the river. It is also a popular tourist destination. However, the Mekong Delta faces several challenges. The region is one of the hardest hit by the global climate crisis, with water levels rising every year. As a result, more and more people require floating houses. In this sense, the Floating Bamboo House project offers a more sustainable solution for the future.

The Floating Bamboo House is large enough for a family to live in comfortably. It has three rooms and is built on a 6m x 6m floor area. Plastic barrels are used in the water-contact area to keep the house above water. The exterior and interior walls of the house are constructed using compressed bamboo sheets, leaves, perforated iron, and bamboo panels. Additionally, the roof of the house is designed to be in harmony with the traditional architecture of the region and is steep to take advantage of solar energy.

It is estimated that floating bamboo houses will be used by more people in the future. These houses are expected to serve different areas, such as playgrounds, vegetable growing areas, or fish farming areas. Moreover, due to the low cost of building, they are also a suitable choice for low-income families.
