Floating or Glued Floor? Which Mounting Type Should You Choose?
30/01/2023

Most users pay attention to the pattern and model when choosing a parquet. Another issue as crucial as the parquet color, design, and model is the installation type of parquet floors. Of the slab mounting type options, floating and bonding are two popular options that have their advantages and disadvantages. This week, as DENDRO, we talked about information that will help you make an informed decision in choosing the type of flooring installation.

Floating Floor and Application

Floating flooring is a type of flooring system where the floorboards are not attached to the subfloor, and the hardwood units are interconnected. It is a popular choice owing to its ease of installation.

The steps as follows to be followed during the floating floor application are;

  • The subfloor should be thoroughly cleaned to remove any dirt or debris.

  • To prevent moisture from the floating floor, a vapor barrier should place on the subfloor.

  • Join the mortise edges of the first row of floorboards along the starting wall.

  • The process is repeated for each subsequent row, clamping the edges together.

  • To provide cushioning and insulation, the subfloor layer is placed between the subfloor and the floating floor.

  • If necessary the last row of parquets is cut to attach a transition strip to the doorway.

Adhesive Flooring and Application:

Adhesive flooring is a type of system in which parquet flooring pieces are fixed to the floor with a special adhesive mortar. It is especially recommended to be applied in areas that have heavy furniture and high user traffic as kitchens.

The steps as follow to be followed during the adhesive flooring application are;

  • The subfloor must be thoroughly cleaned to remove any dirt or residue.

  • A layer of adhesive is applied to the subfloor using a notched trowel.

  • Lay the first floorboards along the starting wall and press the adhesive firmly into the mortar.

  • The process is repeated for each subsequent row, clamping the mortise and groove edges of the floorboards together.

  • The last row of parquets is cut to attach a transition strip to the doorway if necessary.

Both methods have their pros and cons. The adhesive application offers a more secure connection but requires more time and effort to implement. Floating floor application is quicker and easier to implement, but may not be as safe as adhesive application. The choice of accurate methods will depend on the specific needs and preferences of the project.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Floating Floor and Glued Flooring

Your specific needs and preferences will be the most significant criteria when choosing between floating or glued flooring. For those looking for a quick and easy installation, floating flooring will be the better option. For those looking for a more comfortable and solid connection detail, glued flooring will be a more suitable choice. When deciding, it is crucial to consider factors such as the type of subfloor, the environment, and the amount of foot traffic in the area.
