The Importance of The Tree in Flooring
04/04/2022

The most preferred building material in flooring has been parquet from the past to the present. With the soft, durable, and warm atmosphere feeling it offers on the floor surface, its preference as the first choice has not changed for a long time. The product that will appeal to everyone's taste can easily be found with the wide variety of colors and patterns that parquets have. In addition, the fact that the parquets are produced from wood, which is a natural material, allows us to touch a healthy surface and reduce the cost for users with its longevity. In this article, we will talk about the trees that are effective in providing all these features of the parquet and their importance in the production of parquet.

Parquets and Their Types

Parquet, which is the most important and most preferred flooring material, has 3 different types in general; solid, laminate, and laminate flooring. Solid parquets are produced from raw wood and are single-layered, while other parquet types have a layered structure. Laminated parquet is manufactured by gluing 2 or 3 different wood layers in perpendicular directions the raw material of which is completely natural wood. On the top layer, there is real oak or walnut wood veneer, which is defined as valuable wood. Laminate flooring is a resin-impregnated paper printing on compacted sawdust. Although it is not in the parquet class in the world, it is a beautiful-looking coating material used in the sub-heading of parquet in our country Turkey. It is designed to mimic the look of real wood.

Trees Used According to Parquet Class

Solid parquets, which are the oldest parquet type in flooring are produced using hardwoods such as oak, beech, maple, walnut, or various tropical species. There are 3 types of solid parquet in itself; solid floorboard, solid parquet blocks, and mosaic parquet. Laminated parquets, or in other words engineered floors, are generally produced in 2 or 3 layers. The surface layer to be worn is made of solid wood, as in solid parquet. The softer material is chosen for the lower layer. The generally preferred wood type for the upper layer of laminated parquet is oak.

Things to Consider When Choosing The Trees Used

The tree to be used as a raw material for a good parquet is expected to be highly resistant to impacts, have little work, that is, maintain its condition, have a long moisture change period, be easily processed and in addition to all these, it is expected to be aesthetically impressive.

Depending on the function of the area where the parquet will be applied, those with high-strength structures should be used in the selection of parquet wood. For example, while the parquets used in residences will not be exposed to much impact, the parquets used in environments that will be exposed to high impacts such as hotels, schools, and sports halls should be made of higher-strength trees. Tree species with high resistance to abrasive forces; oak, beech, hornbeam, maple, iroko, sapelle, marbau, and walnut.

Parquets are generally used indoors where heating is needed. The situation is even more critical in underfloor heating systems that are heated indoors during the winter months. Expansion differences will occur in the parquets during the transition to environments that are not exposed to environmental heating during the summer months. Resistance is important against shape changes caused by expansion and it is expected that the wood species used in the parquet will also provide these properties.

In addition to their functional function, parquets should also have superior abilities in terms of aesthetics. Most users consider the aesthetic appearance of the parquet rather than its physical structure. Differences such as the natural color of the tree, annual ring structure, and core rays are the factors that provide the color diversity of the parquets. The color scale that provides the aesthetic appearance in luxury parquets can range from light yellow to black, and again the thing that will provide this variety is the type of tree.

Trees Used in Production

The selection of trees to be used in parquet production is important. For example, very hardwood is difficult to process and it would be unnecessary to use such wood in residential areas where it will not be subject to a lot of impacts. For this reason, the tree species to be used should be selected according to the type of space it will serve.

The standards used when choosing wood species: TS 73 EN 13226, TS EN 13227, TS EN 13228, TS 200 EN 13488, and TS EN 13489. In these standards, it is stated that all trees with a Brinell Hardness greater than 10 N/mm2, which is the most sought-after property, can be used in the production of parquet, while it would not be wrong to say that higher values are sought in the top layer wood of solid parquet and laminated parquet. The most used tree species in our country are; oak, beech, ash, chestnut, walnut, red pine, fir, and spruce. While pine, spruce, and fir species cannot stand out compared to others due to their density, hardness, and lack of moisture change times, especially White Oak species are more preferred due to their color and pattern quality, high density and hardness values, as well as the stability created by long moisture change periods.

Importance of Place of Production

The fact that the tree that makes up the parquet is a living material also makes the production conditions important. The normal human life temperature of 22o-25oC is the most ideal value. The relative humidity condition required so that moisture does not adversely affect the material is 50%, and it must be produced, packaged, and stored in these environments. Being aware of the importance of wood and the care it demands in parquet production, Dendro uses systems that ensure sustainable quality by prioritizing aesthetics and technology in their productions.

Dendro Parquet is the leading company in the parquet industry, with nearly a hundred colors and 450 varieties, and able to meet all these production conditions.
