Walnut is another wood species most preferred after oak in parquet production. Scientific (Botanical, Latin) name "Juglans", an English commercial name "Walnut", this tree species adds a strong character to the floor with its color options and rich appearance. It is at the top of parquet preferences, due to the elegance and architectural aesthetics it offers to live spaces.
Walnut from the Americas (Juglans nigra) is more homogeneous and darker than European walnuts (Juglans regia). European walnut is heavier and has a redder color than American walnut. DENDRO also uses American walnut in the production of walnut parquet.
The heartwood of the walnut has a color scale ranging from light brown to dark brown. The sapwood color is pale yellow, creamy, and white. The veining pattern is generally straight.
The types it has are;
⦁ Coconut
⦁ English Nut
⦁ Native European Walnut
⦁ Bastogne Walnut
⦁ White Walnut
⦁ It can be listed as Claro Walnut.
American Walnut has a Brinell hardness of 39 N/mm2 and is softer than some wood species, and this feature makes them easier to process. Its density is stated as 610 kg/m3 at 12% humidity.
Classification is made by looking at whether it is a broad-leaved tree or a coniferous tree when naming a tree as a hard or softwood. Broad-leaved trees are considered hardwoods, while coniferous trees are considered softwoods. For this reason, walnut is in the "hardwood" group. Other similar trees in the hardwood group; are oak, cherry, maple, beech, etc.
To the curious; the Janka hardness test
This test is to determine the degree of resistance of wood against pressure from the top. In determining the degree of hardness; If a steel ball with a diameter of approximately 11 mm is buried in a vertical direction to the parquet surface where the test will be performed, up to half its level, the load amount (Janka method) or the amount of load reached over the diameter of the hole formed in the wood by an average of 50 kg of steel ball with a diameter of 10 mm (Brinell method) the method is available. The hardness value can be given in terms of force or pound-force (lbf), kgf/cm2, kgf/mm2, or N/mm2.
Walnut flooring helps to create a stylish interior design with its natural and unique structure. However, it has advantages and disadvantages like other flooring types. A few of them are as follows;
Advantages:
⦁ Durability: It is not easily affected by moisture and heat, does not deform, and is resistant to rotting.
⦁ Long lifetime: Walnut offers a lifetime of up to 50 years with proper care and cleaning.
⦁ Environmentally friendly: Made from wood, one of the most natural materials, it gives a 100% guarantee in the recycling of parquets.
⦁ Texture: With its unique texture appearance and smooth texture, a quality appearance with architectural aesthetics is obtained on the parquet surface.
Disadvantages
⦁ Limited resources: Walnut, which has been in high demand throughout history, offers limited uses due to its maturation period of up to 100 years.
⦁ Deterioration: As with all-natural products, contact with different materials (such as iron surface) may cause staining on their surfaces when using walnuts. Unlike other parquets, walnut may experience lightening, not darkening, over time.
⦁ Deformation: The fact that it has a relatively soft texture compared to other types of parquet means that the parquet is more open to external factors. For this reason, it is recommended not to be preferred in places where the probability of impact is high.
Considering all its advantages and disadvantages, walnut wood can be a more costly option than other parquets with its quality and unique structure. This cost difference, which we can consider as the first investment cost, is a difference that is worth the high quality, stylish looking, and healthy surfaces you will have in the future.
